What is OTT(Over-the-Top)? Everything You Need to Know

What is OTT?

Over-The-Top (OTT) is the distribution of media content to viewers without the need for a cable or satellite TV service. Some of the most popular OTT services are Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube.

There are two major types of OTT: Live TV services like Sling, that enable users to watch TV channels on their devices; and Video On Demand (VOD), which has the chance to be streamed at any time. Characteristics of OTT

OTT is a wireless, web-based, on-demand, and accessible media service, where a user can browse, search, rent, and buy content on demand at any time, from any device connected to the Internet.

OTT stands for “over the top,” and it is a term used to describe the delivery of video content from a service provider directly to an end user. These providers are typically not the same as the ones that provide internet connectivity, such as Comcast or AT&T. There are many different services available, but this article will focus on some of the most popular ones.

How is OTT delivered?

As of 2018, there are three main methods of delivery for OTT. Services such as Netflix and Hulu provide content to users through the internet, On-Demand services such as Direct TV and Dish Network allow users to watch programming remotely on televisions and mobile devices, and traditional cable companies such as Charter Communications still maintain a large customer base.

What is an Example of OTT?

OTT Services include: YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Hotstar, DirecTV Now, and HBO Now.

YouTube

An article titled “YouTube: OTT” will serve as a guide for anyone interested in learning about the online streaming service. The contribution of YouTube to the entertainment industry is phenomenal. It’s used by people of all ages, backgrounds, ethnicities; everyone finds something they like on YouTube. What separates this company from its competitors is the potential for infinite videos and original content produced by anyone with access to editing software.

Netflix

Netflix has changed the way we watch TV. It is no longer limited to one channel or 20-minute increments. Netflix offers a wide variety of content including movies, documentaries, comedy specials, original series, and more. Netflix is available on nearly every device in the world, making it accessible to people of all ages and lifestyles. Netflix is also introducing new series with beloved actors in hopes of inspiring nostalgia for their previous roles.

Hulu

Hulu has been an OTT success story for years now, becoming one of the largest on-demand streaming services in the country. With more than 10 million subscribers, Hulu streams more than 600 TV shows and 30,000 movies. But did you know Hulu also offers live TV channels? That’s right – it’s not just on-demand. And surprisingly enough, the live TV service is pretty good.

Prime Video

Prime Video is a video streaming service, that made its debut in 2006 and is currently available on many devices including Smart TVs, Fire TV, Xbox One, and the website. Prime Video offers over 40,000 films and TV episodes and is available in most countries.

Hotstar

Many know Hotstar as India’s top sports broadcasting company, but they offer much more than just sports. Hotstar has the latest movies, TV shows, and live TV, making it a go-to place for entertainment. They offer original series like the crime drama Gangs of London (from the makers of Game of Thrones) and Indian Movies like MSG: The Messenger (an epic tale of reincarnation featuring popular actors like Ajay Devgn) and streaming 24/7 popular bigg boss telugu ott show.

HBO

HBO, short for Home Box Office, is an American TV network that offers original programming, movies, and live sports. Originally established in 1972 as the subscription television arm of Time Warner’s entertainment division, HBO has become one of the U.S.’s most successful premium TV channels with many iconic shows including The Sopranos, Sex and the City, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and Westworld.

What’s the Outlook for the OTT Industry?

The outlook for the OTT industry may be declining. The OTT industry’s number one priority is to monetize subscribers. However, there are other services that are taking advantage of the subscription model. It’s worth noting that Netflix has an astronomical amount of subscribers and it’s not even possible for traditional cable companies to compete. This means that traditional cable companies are forced to focus on advertising revenue, which is decreasing rapidly in popularity.

How Did Netflix Shape the OTT Industry

Netflix has been a huge player in the world of OTT and its existence is a reflection of what we know as “cord-cutting.” The statistics show that, as Netflix grew, so did the number of people signing up for cable TV. But what does this say about the future of OTT? The shift to OTT has seen a tremendous growth in the last few years. According to a recent study, by 2021, almost one-third (32%) of the homes in the United States will have a subscription to an OTT streaming service.
